On Conversations
Thought I should write this down before I forget.
At today’s sermon at the St. Joseph church down at Placentia, the priest talked about how nowadays, most conversations start by mentioning the problems that we have in the world. We’re always looking for ways for things to get better. While that’s okay, he asked us Why don’t conversations begin by celebrating the good?
The example that he mentioned was his basketball coach talking to him after a game. The coach had focused on the things he did wrong without congratulating him on the points he scored to help the team. It’s true of the news and politics as well. A lot of what we hear are problems of the people. The happier news stories always get pushed aside. I’m not saying we should ignore problems and think about what could be improved, but I do wonder how people’s attitudes would change if they started conversations talking about more positive things.
